Why trade partial shares?

  • Enhanced Diversification

Spreading investments across multiple stocks and ETFs can help to enhance your portfolio's diversity.

  • Flexibility

Allows you to invest in exact dollar amounts and align investments more closely with your financial goals and strategies.

  • Efficient Use of Capital

You can invest residual cash that might otherwise remain idle, helping your portfolio to work towards growth.

  • Access to Expensive Stocks

Invest in high-priced stocks without the cost of a full share, allowing you to own a piece of your favourite company.

You've got questions, we've got answers

To begin investing in partial shares look for a stock or ETF that has a partial shares symbol on the Buy & Sell page. You can enter buy orders using a dollar amount or share quantity. The minimum amount is $1 or 0.00001 shares, whichever is greater. In WebBroker, you can see the list of eligible securities in the main menu under Trading > Buy / Sell > Fractional Stocks & ETFs.

When placing partial share orders on WebBroker, the TD mobile app, or Advanced Dashboard, the following commissions will apply:

Standard Trader – less than 150 trades per quarter:

  • $1.99 for trades of less than one full share (e.g., 0.5 shares)
  • $9.99 for trades greater than one share (e.g., 2.5 shares)

Active Trader – 150+ trades per quarter:

  • $1.99 for trades of less than one full share (e.g., 0.5 shares)
  • $7.00 for trades greater than one share (e.g., 2.5 shares)

TD Easy TradeTM offers 50 commission-free stock trades each year per client, including partial share trades. For more information on fees, please visit the TD Direct Investing or TD Easy Trade pricing pages.
